BD-101

FUNDAMENTALS OF COMPLEX PROBLEM SOLVING

Instructor-led, 1-day causal analysis boot camp, designed for personnel with little or no experience in solving non-scientific complex problems using root cause analysis. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of root cause and the BlueDragon Method. Case Studies are shown to illustrate the advantages of the BlueDragon methodology.  This course is a prerequisite for BD-201, the BlueDragon Critical Thinking and Complex Problem Solving Method workshop.

Tuition:

$697

BD-202

BLUEDRAGON INDOCTRINATION FOR MANAGERS

Instructor-led, half-day indoctrination designed for managers and above. The

session covers management’s role in overseeing and approving root causes and investigations. They are introduced to the BlueDragon Framework and the many benefits of using BlueDragon. Managers are guided through a sample case study to illustrate the BlueDragon methodology.

LIVE WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
BD-101: Fundamentals of Complex Problem Solving (1-day)
  • This is our Causal Analysis Boot Camp!

  • This live workshop includes Case Studies to reinforce causal analysis fundamentals that are not covered in the web-based training.

  • The fundamental building blocks of causal analysis

  • The differences between data analysis and causal analysis

  • What is “Critical Thinking?” We’ll re-define Critical Thinking in practical terms and discuss some of the more effective Critical Thinking tools for evaluating human performance, equipment failures and program/process breakdowns

  • Classic issues that diminish the effectiveness of root cause analysis, including:

  • Why typical root cause analyses are too labor intensive and inefficient;

  • Why too often root cause analyses do not identify the root causes;

  • Misconceptions about how root causes are actually identified;

  • Why is anyone still using the Fishbone; and

  • Why do managers (and regulators) behave as though they have the answer key when reviewing root causes (and the risks they take by hijacking root causes)?

  • Introduction to data and causal analysis tools

  • Introduction to the BlueDragon Framework: an integration of critical thinking tools with “Lean” and “Agile” techniques to create an efficient and effective approach to causal analysis

  • Overview of effective and ineffective corrective actions to prevent recurrence and Mistake Proofing

BD-201: BlueDragon Critical Thinking and
Complex Problem Solving Workshop
 for Practitioners (4 days)
  • Day 1 of this course covers the fundamentals as described in BD-101E.

    The course uses a Harvard MBA approach:

    • Case Studies of increasing difficulty are provided to enhance an understanding of key concepts and develop proficiency using the BlueDragon Framework.

    • Case Studies are geared towards the Energy industry and Department of Defense operating environments/sites (e.g. Department of Energy Laboratories and project sites, commercial nuclear plants, the Nuclear Weapons Complex, the Chemical Weapons facilities, Oil & Gas plants, Chemical plants, etc.)

  • The course provides a quick refresher on of the fundamentals of Root Cause Analysis and Apparent Cause Analysis (a more comprehensive review is provided in BD-102)

  • What is “Critical Thinking?” We’ll re-define Critical Thinking in practical terms and discuss some of the more effective Critical Thinking tools for evaluating human performance, equipment failures and program/process breakdowns.

  • The differences between data analysis and causal analysis

  • The BlueDragon Framework: an integration of critical thinking tools with “Lean” and “Agile” techniques to create an efficient and effective approach to causal analysis

  • The scalability of BlueDragon and how to use it to stop adverse trends before their root causes cause more significant events

  • Why typical root cause analyses are too labor intensive and inefficient

  • Why too often root cause analyses do not identify the root causes

  • Misconceptions about how root causes are actually identified
